VOICE Program

Art, independence, and self-expression for young adults

We partner with the Edmonds School District to provide monthly art experiences for students ages 18–21 in the VOICE (Vocational Opportunities in Community Engagement) program.

Through structured, accessible projects, they build confidence, develop creative skills, and explore personal expression in a supportive environment.

WHO IT’S FOR

This program serves young adults ages 18–21 enrolled in the Edmonds School District’s transition and life skills programs.

Participants are individuals with developmental and other disabilities who are preparing for greater independence in adulthood. The program is designed to meet a wide range of abilities while encouraging autonomy, choice, and engagement.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SESSION

Each session combines guided instruction with opportunities for personal choice and creative exploration.

  • Guided, step-by-step art instruction

  • Adapted projects to support varying abilities

  • Opportunities for personal choice and creative direction

  • Skill-building through hands-on engagement

  • A calm, inclusive, and supportive environment

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Our commitment to fostering connections within the Edmonds arts community has created meaningful opportunities for participants.

For the first time, student artwork from the program was included in the Edmonds Arts Festival Student Exhibition, providing a platform for artists to share their work with the broader community.

FEATURED PROJECT: STUDENT PORTRAITS

In this project, participants created painted portraits based on their own images.

The instructor first developed simplified outlines from participant photos. From there, each participant painted their portrait—choosing colors, details, and stylistic elements that reflected their own perspective.

The results are highly individual works that demonstrate:

  • Creative decision-making

  • Personal expression

  • Growing confidence with materials and techniques

Each piece is unique, highlighting the artist's voice and personality.

WHY THIS PROGRAM MATTERS

After high school, many participants have limited access to meaningful creative opportunities.

This program provides:

  • Confidence-building through completed work

  • Opportunities for self-expression beyond verbal communication

  • Skill development that supports focus, planning, and follow-through

  • A sense of ownership and pride in creating something personal

For participants, art becomes a way to connect, communicate, and grow.
